Derwent Hill 2018

Its that time again when a lucky group of students travelled to Derwent Hill for a week of fun!

Unfortunately with the Beast from the East, we missed a day and had to travel over to Keswick on the Tuesday. We arrived at the centre and quickly had some lunch before heading out on Derwent water for some canoeing. Students had to work together to assemble the canoes together before paddling away. We reached the famous “One Tree Island” where we practised our rock skimming skills! On the evening, we climbed one of the hills – Latrigg. It was pitch black and all we had to see were torches. It was really fun to turn them off – we couldn’t believe how quickly our eyes adjusted to the dark! When we returned back, some students played table football whilst others sat down to watch Saving Mr Banks.

The next morning, we woke to a beautiful full English breakfast which set us up for the day. Firstly, we headed out to the gardens to tackle the high ropes course. The bravest of students climbed the pole and jumped off to swing on the trapeze! After lunch we headed out to Honister Pass to walk up the gorge. We stopped and crawled through tunnels before jumping into a plunge pool and climbing the waterfall. On the evening, we played team games against 5 other groups. We had to tackle obstacles and challenges whilst working as a team – we came second, just losing out by 1 point! After the games, we settled down to finish our film from the previous.

On Thursday we headed out into Keswick to do some hill walking. The scenery where we stopped for lunch was breath-taking. On the evening, there were no planned activities by the venue staff so we made our own up. Jeff took the boys down to the tennis courts for a game of football followed by hide and seek whilst Sophie stayed with the girls drawing pictures and colouring in. After that, we all joined together for numerous games of cards before heading downstairs to watch a film – tonight’s choice was “The Croons”!

Our last morning, our last breakfast! We packed all of the bus up before heading to our last activity – The lower ropes obstacle course and the dreaded Death Swing!

Everyone has had an amazing week – including Sophie and Jeff. A huge thank you to the staff team at Derwent Hill with a particular big thanks to our tutors – Neale and Andy.
